Seasons Greetings!

Now that we are snowed in and our bikes are in winter storage mode, it seems fitting that we should start the planning process for 2009. About this time every year, when the PMS begins to set in, I start looking at the calendar and scheduling the big rides for the year. Planning the vacation time, looking at the budget and deciding which farkles I am going to need for the upcoming season seem to help me make it through the dead of winter without going completely insane.

The CMM-HSTA crew got together today to synchronize calendars for 2009 and we are making this information available both here and on the HSTA Forum. If you haven't been to the forum, I encourage you to check it out and to use it to keep up to date with events and activities. Please feel free to post comments here as well or send me an email if you have questions or want to join us. HSTA membership is not required to get started with our group so come and check out these great activities.

We hope that you will consider joining us for a ride, event or a breakfast meet in '09. Until then stay warm!

Upcoming CMM Activities - Sept 08 and beyond...

There is plenty of riding still begging to be done this season and the CMM crew is working on some plans! We are looking at dates for day rides in Sept and Oct and will be posting up soon.

If you are looking to stay closer to home, watch for info on our "sort of monthly" meetings at Kaiser's Pizza in Gurnee, IL for some good conversation, tire kicking and ride planning. We have been looking at the 3rd Thursday of each month but the summer has been sporadic.

There are calendar links on the right side of the page that will take you to the HSTA national forum where all the necessary details will be posted for CMM activities. Check it out and join us when you can.

The Riding's Been Good!

Well, that's about all I can say in response to the fact that it has been over a month since my last post to the Blog. The summer has been good and the computer has been off more than on, which is a good thing because that won't be the case as I head into the school year in the next few weeks. I am a HS teacher and although my summer has a reasonable amount of flexibility, it also means that I can't get time off work to attend most of the HSTA events that I would like. So, I pack lots of riding in during the time I do have and this summer has been a bumper crop!

For two weeks in July, I had the luxury of roaming around the great plains and rocky mountains with three other HSTA members from WI and MN. Two of our riders had to cut the trip short, one due to a lack of vacation time and the other due to some mechanical issues. My brother and I remained faithful to the plan though and we ended up riding from WI to SD, MT and WY over the course of our two week tour. As a bonus, we were able to be out for the full two weeks and spend less than $1,000 per person (mainly due to the fact that we camped all but two nights).

Below are a few pictures from the ride. Just some teasers of course!

Here we are in the Badlands, glad that we chose to skirt the interstate
(It rained buckets there and we managed to stay dry)

Here is a pic of the observation tower at Mt. Coolidge in the Black Hills.
The dirt road going up to the tower was full of switchbacks and amazing vistas.

That's my brother on his Road Glide. We were in Custer Park,
the dots in the background are bison.

This is a spot on the Needles Highway. That camper barely squeaked through.

Chris' Campground in Spearfish had some great shade and showers
cost a quarter.

Classic Wyoming.

Dead Indian Pass on one of the windiest days I ever rode.

The top of Beartooth Pass on the WY / MT border.
When we got to camp in Red Lodge we found out that authorities
had been close to closing down the pass due to high winds.

The sign at Beartooth Pass.

Just outside Cooke City, MT.
The gateway to Yellowstone.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
WOW!

The Grand Tetons

One of several high desert canyons in WY.

Pass in the Bighorn Mountains of WY.

BMWMOA Rally in Gillette.
We spent two days at the rally after meeting
a number of riders who were headed there in the week prior.

Summer Solstice - Got Twisties?

We had a great weekend here in WI for the Summer Solstice ride. Plenty of sun, moderate temps and more twisty roads than you could shake a stick at. Despite the recent flooding, the roads were in prime summer shape. A few places had remnants of water encroachment as evidenced by some sand and a film of dirt but the majority was clean.

In all, we had 14 riders for the event and we covered over 300 miles without any incidents. In fact, I only saw 2 LEO's all day. For more detailed reports of the ride, check out the following threads at HSTA and ST.N. Click on the links to go directly to the topics where you will find pics and ride reports as well as the pre-event discussion.

Just a couple days away!

If you are still interested in joining us for the ride, we'll be meeting between 7 and 7:30 for breakfast on Saturday morning (6/21) at Marty's Steakhouse (which is the restaurant attached to the Voyager Inn).

There will be a rider meeting in the parking lot at 8:45 and we are planning to hit the tarmac at 9am.

A Stormy Midwest

I know that it has been awhile since I have posted up here but life has been crazy lately. I am a school teacher and we are just about to wrap up another year and lets say that the atmosphere has been quite hectic. Finals are this week and the students will be checking out on Thursday. I hope to be heading to Denny's "Farkle Mania" on Saturday with more relaxed times ahead - at least for a couple weeks.

Right now I am sitting at my kitchen table ready for the next batch of storms to dump on us. I live on a hill, high enough that flooding is not an issue but unfortunately many folks here in the southern burbs of Milwaukee have not been so lucky. Last night as I tried to make my way to the school for an event, I had do change my route 3 times due to road flooding, sometimes more than 3 feet deep! Much of that has subsided but I anticipate round 2 this afternoon. I hope that anyone reading this is staying dry.

Now on to some more important matters of 2 wheels:

I have not gotten around to a ride report on the TWiSTAR weekend but it was an excellent time. There are reports and pix here if you are interested: Click to go to TWiSTAR site.

This coming Saturday we are putting on a "Farkle Mania" day (our version of a club garage day). See the thread at ST.N for more info: Clicky Here.

If you are interested in riding with us for the Summer Solstice run, please contact me soon. With the ride being only 2 weeks out, we are making the final plans now. Click here for the details.

Riding Season In Full Swing - June Events

Well the Crud Run is over, the grass is green and the trees are starting to show signs of life. Most of the roads are clean now due to the recent rains and we can expect to enjoy things for about a month or so before chip-seal season begins. If you're a die hard rider like me, you probably have a couple thousand mile on for the season - or at least you wish you did. So it might be time for a little "Farkle Mania".

The CMM-HSTA event for June is a tech day sponsored by Co-Director Denny Drury. We'll be meeting at his place from 10am-2pm to change tires and oil or do some farkle installs. You can also come by just to watch the folly and eat some of Denny's food. In any event, put it on your
calendar but be sure to contact Denny, via the link above, if you want to be on the list for tire changes that day (you will want to ship them to his place too) or if you are going to need some help with something specific.

In addition to our June event, we also have a "Just For Fun" ride to sweeten things up a bit. Click on the calendar link to the right for more info on this weekend event!
